Go to flickr and search for Helsinki and ggj to see photos of the weekend. More coming in all the time.
Also keep eyes peeled for video footage – of course we are going to have a super-amazing-professional documentary from the Aalto University Media Factory guys, but the ‘family-holiday’ style amateur footage is also pretty cool…Now ready to watch: Helsinki Game Jam night 1, video evidence! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i_pai6_SRGw
Finnish Game Jam was a success with almost a hundred jammers altogether! A lot of cool new games were made during the weekend, check them out under the “Games” tab. All GGJ games can be found on http://www.globalgamejam.org/games. A game jam is not a competition by nature, but strives for innovation, experimentation and collaboration, and of course having fun and meeting new people! However, some not-so-serious competition can motivate and boost the effort. To reward the 48 hours of hard, fast-paced toiling three awards were handed out to:
Best Game: Play Dead 2: The Growling of the Dead
Best Silverlight Game: Lyre
Jammer’s Favorite: Grow Up!
Other finalist in the Best Game category were:
Fast Confusion (Helsinki)
Grow up! (Tampere)
I Deceive You (Kajaani)
Lost Flame (Kajaani)
Lyre Inspyre (Helsinki)
The Great Adventures of Mr. KamiNo Buresuretto (Kajaani)
Ultimate Showdown (Helsinki)
Congratulations to the winners, but also to each and every participant! You were all great!
The next Global Game Jam will be on January 28-30, 2011, so mark your calendars! We hope to be back even bigger and better! Until then, keep the jamming on!
Global Game Jam is not a competition by its nature, but there are couple of competitions going on. We also want to pick couple of favorites and hand out a prize or two.
Finnish Game Jam is giving prizes in three categories: Best Game, Jammers Favorite, and Best Silverlight Game. Best Game and Best Silverlight Game are chosen by a national jury with two judges in each location:
TAMPERE:
Director Koopee Hiltunen, Neogames
Professor Frans Mäyrä, University of Tampere
KAJAANI:
Pricipal Lecturer Turo Kilpeläinen, KAJAK
Project Manager Arto Moilanen, KAJAK
HELSINKI:
Lead Designer Jaakko Kemppainen, Sauma Technologies
Producer Pekka Kupiainen, Nokia
Jammers favorite will be chosen by participants. All jamming participants have one vote. You have time until Tuesday 2.2.2010 9:00 to use your vote to select amongst ALL Finnish games. Voting system will be opened today at 17:00.
For those who are asking now (3 days in), the Creative Commons license that you sign up to (by creating your GGJ account and uploading your game to their site), is detailed here:

Check it out! We just spotted a fire wire outside! (Our timezone’s restrictions) The show had nothing to do with our jam, but a wedding in the neighbourhood. We had a view to it from our window and our quick photographers went outside to immortalize the moment:

Two fire wires and the wedding. Hopefully no deception ongoing.
Fire & wire, but no lyre

That means we have had keynote, tech talk, introduction, guest speech by Jaakko, theme introduction…in fact all the speaking. So while people are getting to know each other, here is the theme and constraints as presented to the Helsinki jammers.
